Some days ago I found a suspicious charge on my credit card, I receive a SMS as soon as a charge occurs, so I called the card issuer and asked them what it is. They did not have any information that helped me to remember any purchase, so I blocked the card and told them to reimburse me for the charge.
Today I searched for the payment service that was used, it was epoch.com, so I clicked through that somewhat strange website and started a chat there with one of there service employees.
Here is what I found out, someone used the credit card to purchase a porn website subscription. The IP used during the purchase is one that belongs to Austria, provider A1, the name and email used for the purchase is of a guy from NY USA, his details are on his business website. Now I am considering to go to the #police
to file a report, because I believe the fraud was conducted from within the EU.
The payment service said they will cancel the subscription and transfer the money back to my account. My bank also said I will be reimbursed for the false charge. The cost for the new credit card was about 20 €, so that is the loss I have.
My bank is not interested in any of the things I found, for them it is just business as usual and probably happens dozens of times a day. I would like to find out where the credit card details were leaked, I guess some data breach is the reason, but till now I did not get any information. The credit card was less than a year old, so the breach must have happened since then.
What do you think?
