Friendica 2019.06 Released

Thanks everyone who contributed, be it directly by committing patches or new features, doing translations or reporting issues.

And now, we happily announce the availability of Friendica 2019.06. It contains many bug fixes, enhancements of existing functionality and some new features. The most noteworthy changes since the last release in March are:
- Added native two-factor authentication
- Added reshare counts
- Added mascot to error pages (thanks to @lostinlight)
- Moved Friendica private message and contact request to ActivityPub

You can find a complete overview of the changes in the CHANGELOG file.

How to Update

Updating from old Friendica versions

If you are updating from an older version than the 2018.09 release, please first update your Friendica instance to that version as there were several important changes in that version.

Please further note, that since Friendica 3.6 we use Composer for dependency management. If you are updating via git, you have to remember to update the dependencies as well.

Pre-Update Procedures

Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently. While testing, we did not encounter problems, but better safe than sorry.

With this release we raised the hard requirements to PHP 7. If you are still using PHP 5.6+, this version won’t work anymore on your system and we urge you to upgrade to PHP 7.1 at least.

Using Git

Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository. Remember to also update the dependencies with composer.
cd friendica
git pull
bin/composer.phar install
cd addon
git pull
If you want to switch the branch (e.g. if you helped testing the RC code) please do so after the pull using git checkout master (or develop).

Be aware that the .htaccess file was removed from the git repository in the 2019.01 version. You might have to restore yours from a backup (if you have done local changes) or from the .htaccess-dist if you had not done it before.

Using the Archive Files

If you had downloaded the source files in an archive file (zip or tar.gz) please download the current version of the archive (friendica-full-2019.06.zip and friendica-addons-2019.06.tar.gz) and unpack it on your local computer.

As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.

The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2019.06 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.

Please be aware of the changes in the configuration format in the 2019.03 version. You should follow the instructions linked from your admin panel as soon as possible to move your configuration to the new location.

Post Update Tasks

The database update should be applied automatically, but maybe it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script
bin/console dbstructure update
from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.

How to Contribute

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Thanks everyone who helped making this release possible and have fun!- - - - - -

Thanks everyone who helped making this release possible and have fun!

Limiting number of users?

Ingo Jürgensmann - 2019-06-22 17:22:08 GMT
@Nerdica Forum

Right now this #Friendica node has 1098 registered users and like 200 monthly active users.

I'm thinking about switching the registration mode from open registration to closed registration. With closed registration it should be still possible to invite friends over here and get new users, but it won't be possible to still register without an invitation.

The idea of limiting the number of users on this node are:
* this is a private server with limited resources. So having thousands or tenthousands of users is unlikey to run will on the current hardware. It's not like the current hardware is facing its limits, but I want to avoid facing these limits for the sake of smooth operation for the current users
* the basic idea of the federation is that everyone can run an own node instead of having large, centralized nodes. Currently we have 3 or 4 large nodes running Friendica and limiting the number of users would strengthen the federated nature of Friendica by encouraging new users to register on smaller nodes.

So, how do you think about this? My basic idea is to have a user count between 1000 and 1200 users. When I come close to 1200 registered users, I will close down registration and when users got deleted and the number comes down to 1000 users again, I will open registration again. As already said: as a registered user you should be able to invite other people regardless of the registration being open or closed.

NOTE: "direct messages" visibility was changed in #Friendica and #Hubzilla. Now when you send a "private" DM from Mastodon to these two networks, message's visibility in those networks will be limited (yay!)

Please, remember, that #OStatus networks - GNU Social, postActiv, as well as any malicious servers - will still show your DMs from Mastodon as public. 🔓

Progetto per un aggregatore politico federato. L'Ecosistema di Organizzazioni.

https://coxsa.blogspot.com/2019/05/progetto-per-un-aggregatore-politico.html

since #friendica is part of the #fediverse there's no need to have another account there. Otherwise I would switch, just to give your instance a more productive purpose.

Maybe ringing the bell via #twitter or facebook might bring more users to your digital home?

Thanks for hosting an instance anyway. 😊

76 user on my #Friendica server, I think not one of them is active and more than 75% didn't post anything at all.

#Friendica

Good question!

You can find it on every #Friendica node, when you put a /friendica at the end of the domain name
In your case it is: https://social.isurf.ca/friendica

forum.friendi.ca and XMPP support chat down

Hello,
the hoster of one of my servers seems to have severe problems. A lot of servers aren't reachable.
One of the affected machines is the host of the VPS our Friendica Community Forums are running on. Unfortunately, the XMPP support chat is running on that VPS too.

I'm sorry. Stay tuned for more information.

Info:
Issue solved. Apparently, the VPS was running but network was down. A reboot from the VPS admin panel wasn't possible. The VM didn't respond. So I forced a shutdown. All up and running again. Phew! 😌

Diffu is a Free Software allowing authors to publish all kinds of texts or articles and to aggregate the reactions they generate on social networks, especially through #ActivityPub such as #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Pleroma, #PixelFed, #Funkwhale, #Hubzilla, #GNUSocial ...

Diffu is a kind of free and federated alternative to #Medium or other applications that are not always easy to install.

Theme Developers

Are there theme developers out there that want to create additional themes for Friendica?

It would be great to have some more crowdpower on that topic. If you are interested, just visit https://github.com/friendica/friendica

Friendica issue

Thanks in advance!

It's the first I've heard of this project and only from Paul's perspective. If it's how he tells it, it's worrisome, really. I have to read it slowly and contrast other sources when I can.

A critical FAQ about EUnomia

The #EU is currently funding a research with about 2.45 mio €, that includes a research within and about the #fediverse.

The project is called #EUnomia. Their overall goal as they claim is to counter #fakenews.

Their partner are involved within the sector of mass #surveilience, law enfocments, military and social control.

I've done some research about them and their partners, what I found is highly concerning me.

To make these information accesable for others, I've wrote a critical FAQ.

Filter our contacts publications

Hello !Friendica Support

Is there a way on #friendica to configure filters on each of your contacts, to be able to see in our "timeline" only some specific posts?
For instance, I'd like to follow one developer of a #fediverse project, but I really don't care about it's sex life. So I'd like to configure the connection to only display posts with specific hashtags.
How would you do that ?
(FYI, this feature is available in #hubzilla and it's called connfilter)

@switching.social thank you for the response.

I could find @Asahel (my Pixelfed account) from Friendica, but couldn't find @Asahel (my Friendica acct.) from Pixelfed. Weird...

The biggest issue is finding #content from other pixelfed instances within pixelfed though 🙁

Since #Friendica federates without issues, hopefully #Pixelfed #devs will see my post and reply.

PixelFed

N00b #question:

I just created a #Pixelfed account and everything is hunky-dory, except that it doesn't seem to federate with anything! Not with other Pixelfed nodes and not with other federated platforms. All I can see is the local results - and that's slim pickings at best. Is this a permissions issue related to my pixelfed server of choice only?

So, to rephrase this as a question: how do I find content from other Pixelfed instances, and how do I follow people on different #ActivityPub platforms?

Twitter account protection debriefing

Several months ago I protected my #Twitter account to protect myself from myself. I wasn’t a target of any harassment, but I often couldn’t help myself replying on random people’s replies on a tweet that was shared by my contacts. This regularly devolved into dragged-on, sleep-depriving, anxiety-inducing conversation that lead nowhere.

Today, I’m still sometimes disappointed that I can’t directly reply to my Twitter contacts that aren’t following me back, but I also remind myself that I can come across as annoying on Internet, so little of value is lost in that regard.

But on the other hand, I can’t remember the last time I had a night-long pointless conversation with a random Twitter user who ultimately doesn’t care about what I have to say. It doesn’t happen on #Friendica because I only receive the posts and replies from my direct contacts, which limits my exposure to toxic accounts.

Which means that I don’t have to protect my #Friendica account, and I’m grateful for it.

This has been on #bountysource for a while ~ there are still people wanting to find a way to implement #groups here, https://www.bountysource.com/issues/25215034-implement-groups the amount has grown a bit in the last few years. It's a big project to undertake and since Diaspora is a community run project, this implantation is going to take a community to happen. Even the ability to create a 'group' or forum type profile like #Friendica has would be great.

If you want to use the Fediverse through a Facebook-style interface, you may want to try Friendica.
