💡 Fediverse idea
Today it's still impossible to complitely get rid of #email
. If you're like me, you probably communicate via email very
rarely, modern communications happen in messengers - or in #Fediverse
😀 But we still need email for all sorts of singups, and for receiving information like bank letters, service notifications etc.
Fediverse has all sorts of bridges, to Gopher, IRC, XMPP, etc etc.
What if Fediverse ( #Friendica
?) could allow receiving email
to your email@example.com
account? An extra inbox, sandboxed from posts and (direct) messages. I suggest only the receiving functionality (and UI), because of the difficulties of properly configuring email servers to not be banned by main email providers. Ensuring that email is received by users is probably easier than ensuring their replies are delivered to "traditional" providers. This will allow users who need an email only for occassionally receiving information to do it directly in Fediverse (adding one extra reason to use it).
Many people say it's difficult to set and maintain one's own email server. At the same time, "alternative" email services (believed to be #privacy
friendly) invariably rely on trust: no matter that they open sourced frontend code and sometimes mobile clients (and even added encryption), we always have to trust
the code they actually run on their servers (just like we trust the administrator of our Fediverse node). Fediverse has over 4k servers, Friendica and Hubzilla together - over 600. This functionality will help decentralizing email.

it would be challenging because email works on ports 25 or 465 or 587 (TLS) while Friendica is made to receive requests on ports 80 or 443 (SSL). So there would need to be some additional server configuration required for this to work.
What are your thoughts on this, fedizens? What are the technical challenges? Can this be added as a plugin?
