The poddery story

Bild/Foto

poddery.com ( #poddery stands for Pod Dery ) was started around 2010 (domain name was registered on 2010 December 07) by Joe Bivins. To place this in history of #diaspora,
1. The famous lecture "Freedom in The could" by Eben Moglen, was delivered on 2010 Feb 05.
1. This speech inspired 4 students of New York University’s Courant Institute (Illia Zhitomirskiy, Daniel Greppi, and Raphael Sofaer) to launch a crowd funding campaign to replace #facebook on 2010 April 24.
1. The first developer preview was released on 2010 September 15 and first consumer alpha version was released on 2010 November 23. The first tag on the github repo dates 2010 December 2.

As you can see from these dates, poddery.com is one of the earliest diaspora pods. Possibly, third pod after joindiaspora.com and diasp.org (if you know another pod started before poddery.com, let me know in comments). When we organized our second Mini #Debian Conference in Pune in 2011, we opened an account in poddery.com () and its first post was on 2011 June 23.

We posted many photos of the events on this account and when we heard Joe Bivins was planning to close this pod on 2013 June 30, we did not want to lose these posts. We offered to take over the maintenance and launched Save Poddery Campaign in June 2013. We got around 50% of the target amount and with around 66% discount by KnightSwarm, we took over maintenance of poddery.com. We are running this service for about 6 years now. In between we added #xmpp service and last year #matrix.

You can follow the history of this service via and @poddery.com updates accounts.

We are running our 3rd crowd funding campaign now. Thanks to everyone who contributed, money as well as time and effort to run the service.

It's the first I've heard of this project and only from Paul's perspective. If it's how he tells it, it's worrisome, really. I have to read it slowly and contrast other sources when I can.

A critical FAQ about EUnomia

The #EU is currently funding a research with about 2.45 mio €, that includes a research within and about the #fediverse.

The project is called #EUnomia. Their overall goal as they claim is to counter #fakenews.

Their partner are involved within the sector of mass #surveilience, law enfocments, military and social control.

I've done some research about them and their partners, what I found is highly concerning me.

To make these information accesable for others, I've wrote a critical FAQ.

#Friendica would be so much better if it wasn't so clunky. #Diaspora feels much snappier, but unfortunately it has no integration with #ActivityPub.

I don't mean to shit talk Friendica's developers, I think they've been doing a good job, but why is it so slow to use? It's not just performance: there's a lot of UX details that slow you down while you use it.

It's frustrating, because I don't feel safe recommending it to anyone who is looking for an alternative social network, but doesn't like the microblogging style of Mastodon.

Gestionnaire de protocole web+diaspora://

Hello.

#newtodiaspora ? Here's a #tip from a #newcomer: #start with some #tags and then you add more after a while #addtags . And, don't be #shy or #picky when it comes to starting to #share / #sharing with people by adding them to anyone of your #aspects . #people #here are often #funny or #creative , often by adding #ownart / #diy / #mywork , not least of which is #photo / #foto / #photography . One interesting tag seems to #gimpsunday . Yet a nother tip is #language. Even if #you #think language is a #barrier , in here it's most often not so. My #forgotten #german and #french is #returning now, #thankyou #diaspora #community !

#Sorry not sorry for #overtagging. I just wanna spread this as much as #possible. Part of why I #write it here as a #comment

If someone from #pleroma, #gnusocial, #hubzilla could reply to this thread :
https://friendica.valvin.fr/redir/2?url=display/7f2cc12a-135c-d32a-775a-478002420413

with "this a test reply from xxxx" where xxxx is your network it would be great 😀
I did #Mastodon and #Diaspora but if I've forgotten other network who can read this message your are welcome 😀

the goal is to illustrate the network connectivity of #Friendica

thank you 😀

Guten Morgen #Welt!

#Schwanzwurzelbruch!

We are currently holding a 3 days hackathon in the Mozilla office in Berlin. Hopefully some exciting work is going to be accomplished!

diaspora* is a community project only built by volunteers. If you want to contribute, now is a good time to join! Check out the wiki page and look for newcomer and help wanted issues on github. Join #diaspora-dev on IRC freenode if you want to chat!

If you're not technical, check the other ways to contribute.

Of course, we need to thanks @Dennis Schubert for the organization and #mozilla for hosting us. Keep rocking the free web!

Hello friends and strangers on the internet! As you may have heard by now, some diaspora* team members met from Friday to Sunday to discuss and hack together. We will be following up with a proper summary on the blog soon, but we need to finish some proposal first, so everything we did can actually make sense to you. 😀 However, as the hackathon ended a few hours ago, I thought it might be a great idea to share some of our excitement with you.

In total, we spent 34 hours in the office, which brings us to 11.3 hours of work per day on average! Massive respect to my fellow diasporians for keeping up, especially since this was on the weekend, after a week of work and long trips for some folks! 😀

We did not spend all the time writing text and code, though. We also spend a lot of time discussing valuable topics. I will not be spoiling all of those, because you will be able to read up on them on Discourse soon, but some of those points included questions around
  • How can we improve the overall user experience?
  • How do we make streams more useful and more flexible for our users?
  • How should reshares look in the future?
  • How could we deal with stale PRs?
  • How should we implement a mechanism to mark bots and organization accounts as such?
and some other important points that will all be summarized in the official blog post coming up soon-ish. As for the code side, we also accomplished a bunch of awesome things, like
  • finishing the two-factor authentication implementation, which is now available to pods running develop, and will be released in the upcoming minor release,
  • finishing the user archive import, which is another huge step towards being able to migrate users from one pod to another,
  • adding a PWA manifest to diaspora, which allows mobile users to usee diaspora* as a somewhat-Progressive Web App on their phones,
  • working on the API, reviewing the code together, improving the API authentication scopes, fixing up inconsistencies, building a JSON schema we can test against, and generally give the API a gentle push towards the end, and
  • working hard on bringing back likes on comments.
On the project site, we didn't make too much visible progress, but that's because we spent significant portions of time rethinking the way we structure and design our contents to make it more accessible to non-technical folks. While my initial idea about user documentation and guides was probably not too bad, we identified a way better approach, which required several hours of planning the guides alone. Nonetheless, we managed to write large portions of the user-related guides/tutorials/FAQ, migrated the old blog posts, got a general idea on the contents that need to be rewritten, and did implemented some internal changes as well as visual improvements. Really happy about the progress here!

Overall, it is incredible what a small group of people can achieve in a very short period. Obviously, this is not a development speed we can keep up on regular days, but I feel like everyone got a fresh portion of motivation out of the event. At least I did. 😀

I absolutely have left out several things here, but I wanted to provide y'all with an initial overview for now. Stay tuned for the full story that will be published via the project's official channels!

Finally, thanks to @Fla, @lislis, @Jonne Haß, @Senya, @Benjamin Neff, and @Waithamai Dragonqueen for being there. Some of those lovely people had to travel quite a bit! Super awesome to meet some of you in person again, or for the first time! Special thanks goes to @goobler for participating remotely, providing valuable feedback and language reviews; and also special thanks to my awesome colleagues at the Mozilla Berlin office for helping me plan this event.

American Football is getting started, so...

#FantasyFootball is getting going too. If anybody on #Friendica #Mastodon #Diaspora #Prolerma #Pixelfed #GNUsocial or any #Federated #ActivityPub user on earth wants to try it, I can be the Commissioner.

I've run leagues in the past and I set the points so that it's hard for a skilled person with advanced game knowledge to have an advantage, and beginners have a real chance at winning. In the past, I did leagues with buy-in and free to enter. Both are equally fun. The buy-in leagues had trophies and all the buy-ins were paid out in prizes; any manager had 50:50 odd's of winning back their buy-in.

My brain was feeling a bit beat up, so I logged off Facebook. The new of the fire at Notre-Dame was heartbreaking enough, but then I started seeing comments snarking on people of faith, and memes made from Disney's animated "Huncback..." movie.

I don't know. I had just had enough. My feed was an endless scroll of tragedy, snark, and recycled crap. It might be time for an FB break. I need to explore #Diaspora more. It's nice to just scroll through my stream here and not see all the algorithm-generated ads and posts.

Mine is a troubled, wearied head. Probably best to lay it down and get some sleep.

A good night to you, #Diaspora.

What I dislike about the federation

I have been noticing since a while there is a very impolite attitude among many people who use the federated networks, the lacking of desire to build a community that include all the other ones from all the different countries and languages.

Many times I see posts that starting in English which is the most common ground to communicate among the others that end filled up in any others languages than English, along the fact that is unkindly and annoying, it goes in the opposite way of the inclusion which should be the reason why a social network exists.

It is true that Mastodon resolved it brilliantly but in Diaspora and Friendica you can't exclude topics because the language that means is up to the users take the task to avoid cross languages in any topic.

However I see there isn't any desire to avoid that behavior and people are quite careless about that, hence I think I will start to ignore all the people that do not respect this very simple, unwritten and basic rule.

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #art, #coaching, #googleplus, #literature, #poetry, #quotes and oodles of other stuff. I signed up over here because, as you all know, Google+ is shutting down.I'm basically dilly-dallying on the internets (whimsical, eclectic and at times NSFW). I do have another account at #diaspora but couldn't use the credentials over here. Guess I have to figure out how it works exactly, with pods and the Federation.

When the Inmates Run the Asylum!

I posted this everywhere and hope you'll read the full thing on Medium. If you're logged in on Medium you can clap, once or up top 50 times. Did you know that? If you don't like it, you'll have to come back here and tell me. And if there are details to correct, please do let me know.

This article tries to explain the difference between just another silo like MeWe and countless other attempts

To All Who are #NewHere

Welcome!

Besides all the other very helpful stuff that people post here about the #Federation and the #Fediverse, we still see a lot of new people appear, post their #newhere message, and then we never see them again. To help with that, I wanted to offer this little bit of information.
Diaspora takes time to become what you want it it to be.

This is because #Diaspora will not suggest “people you may know” or “stuff you might be interested in.” There’s no data-mining or tracking or spying on you to find out what to “suggest” to you. You build your own here, and that takes a little more time. It’s well worth the investment, but things will get off to a slow start at first. So I suggest the following:

Follow #hashtags that you’re interested in. You’ll find some really great stuff written by people who share that interest. Read the comments on those posts, and you’ll find even more people who write great stuff on the subject.

Follow people instead of just hashtags. Those people you find who write really good stuff, you can share with (add to your Aspects). I create new Aspect Categories according to some of the hashtags I follow. You can also ignore people who write stupid stuff, or who just fill your Stream with spam posts.

Make an imaginative profile that makes people want to share with you. Besides just listing your interests, you can include things you have contributed to the world. Even if it’s just “Little League outfielder” or “I talk too much in class” or “I have an awesome recipe for peach cobbler.”

Invest a little time in making Diaspora your own. It doesn’t really work on “auto-pilot.” It’s well worth the time!

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora*

With Google+ closing today, you might have just signed up to diaspora* looking for a new home. We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us! We have a big existing community of former G+ users, and you could try tags such as #gplusrefugee and #googleplus to connect with people you know from G+.

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

❤ diaspora*
